Call for Papers

Recent environmental concerns, the Covid pandemic, and the Russian-Ukrainian war have brought about radical changes that alter our perceptions of sports in the economy and society. These unprecedented events have globally challenged the business models of professional sport, once thought to be robust, and have further reinforced the inequalities of access to mass sports. International diplomacy uses the sport as a soft power with a vehemence not seen since the Cold War. Uncertainty and insecurity have become constant in our everyday lives, especially in this part of Europe. It is affecting every aspect of how we relate to sports.

The crises usually force us to rethink our perspectives and practices. At the intersection of the pandemic, war threat, and environmental stress, there are many challenges to address: how to make the mass sport more inclusive, how to end discrimination and how to reduce the wastefulness in the global sports industry, how to lower the diplomatic stakes of international competitions, etc.

In this thematic issue of Transylvanian Society, we accept studies that help us understand these processes and changes and/or formulate scientifically based expectations about the future of the sporting world. Relevant topics of the special issue include, among others:

• changes in the community vs. individual nature of mass sports due to the epidemic and physical distancing
• inequalities in access to mass sports in times of crisis: declining sociability, deepening health inequalities, segregation of vulnerable social groups
• operational solutions for the difficulties in maintaining local sports infrastructure
• the effects of increasing digitalization of sports
• challenges to the sustainability of the global international sports system, the impact of the epidemic on professional sport as an industry
• Inequalities in the distribution of resources and benefits in professional sports, the precarisation of athletes, career drop-out in times of crisis
• sport as soft-power diplomacy in the past and today
• the representation of power asymmetries in the events, rules, and language of international competitive sports

A title, an abstract of 250 words maximally, and 5 keywords should be sent to the editors before September 30, 2022. The editors will invite 7 authors to submit their papers of circa 7000 words before November 30, 2022. After peer-reviewing, the special issue will be published in the first half of 2023. Apart from the innovative papers, the editors plan to publish several book reviews.

AZ ERDÉLYI TÁRSADALOM társadalomtudományi szakfolyóirat 2020/1-es számának tervezett témaköre: A szociális munka és szociális ellátás rendszerváltás utáni 30 éve

Romániában a rendszerváltás óta eltelt időben a szociális munka és a szociális ellátó rendszer jelentős fejlődési folyamaton ment keresztül. Az ország számos egyetemén különböző nyelveken (újra)indult a szakember-képzés. Megalakult az országos Szakmai Kollégium, mely a más területen működő hasonló szervezetek mintájára többféle szerepet tölt be (érdekvédelem, felügyelet, együttműködés stb.). A szociális ellátással kapcsolatos törvények számos változatban láttak napvilágot, keresve a megfelelő támogatási formákat.  A szociális ellátórendszer kerettörvénye is többrendben újult meg. A kormányzati és civil szolgáltató-hálózat bővült és differenciálódott

A romániai szociális ellátás rendszerváltás utáni történetéről írni komplex és nagy feladat. Az ET jelen száma szeretné felvállalni ezt a kihívást, és megpróbál valamiféle látleletet adni arról a közel harminc évről, ami a ’89 decemberében történt rendszerváltás óta eltelt. Nem csupán a szociálpolitika történéseinek a hullámvonalát érdemes követni ebben a visszatekintésben, hanem a szociális ellátás intézményrendszerének az alakulását, az ott dolgozók szemléletének és szakmai kihívásainak a változásait, és az utóbbi három évtized terep-kutatási eredményeit is.

Az Erdélyi Társadalom a 2020/1-es lapszáma ebben a kérdéskörben vár vitaindító és kutatási eredményeket bemutató írásokat.

A megjelentetni kívánt tanulmányok rövid kivonatának (fél oldal) beküldési határideje: 2020. március 20.  Az elkészült tanulmányok beküldési határideje 2020. május 20. A világjárvánnyal kapcsolatos akadályoztatások miatt a határidőt meghosszabbítjuk 2020. június 15-ig.

A kivonatok elfogadása még nem jelenti automatikusan a tanulmány megjelenésre való elfogadását! A kivonatokat és majd a tanulmányokat, és ahhoz kapcsolódó anyagokat (rövid angol és magyar kivonat, a szerzők biográfiai adatai) az Erdélyi Társadalom honlapjára kell feltölteni (http://www.erdelyitarsadalom.ro/keziratok/keziratok-bekuldese.html).

A tanulmányokat két anonim bíráló véleményezi, az ún. double blind peer review eljárásnak megfelelően. A megjelenésre való elfogadás esetén a szerzőnek, a bírálók esetleges javaslatai alapján, a megadott határidőn belül, át kell dolgoznia kéziratát.

Sports is taking an ever more important place in global socio-political and financial-economic affairs. Global sports media events, like the Olympic Games, and the different World and European Championship attract a lot of media coverage, spectators and public debate. In modern times, sports have been organized mostly on a national basis. States and their citizens were the most prominent stakeholders of major sports competitions and events. Due to globalization, Europeanization and transnational and mobility processes the international sports structure is changing in a rapid tempo. Sports was a symbol of national identity in the first place, sports events and its international representative bodies in modern times tie in with the multi-layered global governance structure that has arisen recently in postmodern time when mediated spectator sport become a commodified and commercialised product and mass consumer good. As a consequence – although the connection between national identity and sports is still prominent – the structure and representative bodies of the sports world have to coop with a number of new phenomena and cases against the backdrop of these socio-economic and cultural phenomena.

The editors of the special issue of the journal of Transylvanian Society invite authors to elaborate on questions related to the changing reality and identity of the global sports world. Relevant topics of the special issue include, among others:

• National identity promoting specific sports related to national self-images and stereotypes;
• universal rules, regulations and codes for the steering of imnternational and national sports federations
• dual nationality, national representation and bonding in international sports events       
• the role of sports in identity formation of national, ethnic and other minorities
• the role of regional competition in building new identities, like European identity, Asian identity, but also other types of identity, like Gaelic and nomadic identity
• foreign policy and rivalry in sports
• the interaction of decolonization and sports
• the commercialization of sports, including the branding of teams and individual sports icons and celebrities as a marketing object
• communication and language in international sports
